Project Enhancement: Summer Color
Oh, Those Pesky Weeds! | President's Message | Odds and Ends | Arborist Corner | Protecting our Waterways | Project Enhancement Irrigation | Project Enhancement Summer Color | Rooting in the Root Zone | What is a CLT?

Climatic changes require specific measures to maintain the appearance of a landscaped environment. With the summer upon us, there are certain steps that should be taken to ensure the continuous beauty on any landscaped area during the increase in temperature.

Color when properly used, can dramatically enhance the aesthetic value of a property. Color choices that should be
kept in mind for summer are Impatiens, Petunias, Marigolds, Vinca, and Periwinkle.

Impatiens being the most popular and more commonly seen plant material are also very durable. These plants are
not high maintenance and if given the right amount of partial shade and water, can thrive.

If planting any ground cover, aeration should be completed before plant material is installed. Aerating soil allows
fertilizer and water to get deep into the root systems, and prevents run off. Areas that are not aerated do not
develop or establish root systems well.

Controlling pests is also an important factor to maintaining healthy color throughout the summer months.

Insects such as snails, mites, aphids, can wreak havoc on plant material if not properly controlled.

Last but not least, irrigation plays a vital role in the survival of plant material during the hot summer months.

Water during the coolest parts of the day, preferably, early morning, and increase cycles to accommodate the
need for more water during summer months.
